Discovering syntactic hierarchies
نویسندگان
چکیده
The acquisition of syntactic rules is predicated upon the successful discovery of syntactic categories (parts of speech). These do not simply constitute a set, but in fact form a nested hierarchy, which allows rules to apply at different levels of generality. Languages provide a variety of cues to syntactic categorization phonological, semantic and distributional. However, the relative reliability of these cues differs from language to language. This paper presents a computational model capable of acquiring the hierarchy syntactic categories from different combinations of cues. Interestingly, the model is domain general and has been successfully applied to non-linguistic discovery of hierarchical structure.

متن کاملDiscovering and Comparing Topic Hierarchies
Hierarchies have been used for organization, summarization, and access to information, yet a lingering issue is how best to construct them. In this paper, our goal is to automatically create domain specific hierarchies that can be used for browsing a document set and locating relevant documents. We examine methods of automatically generating hierarchies and evaluating them. To this end, we comp...
متن کاملLinking as constraints on word classes in a hierarchical lexicon
In this paper, we propose an alternative account of linking patterns which does away with intermediary mechanisms such as thematic or actor/undergoer hierarchies. The basis of this theory is constraints on word classes, deened by both syntactic and semantic criteria, which encode generalizations between semantic roles and syntactic arguments. We show that the generalizations a linking theory ne...
متن کاملMulti-level Association Rule Mining: an Object-oriented Approach Based on Dynamic Hierarchies
Previous studies in data mining have yielded e cient algorithms for discovering association rules. But it is well-known problem that the two controlling measures of support and con dence, when used as the sole de nition of relevant association rules, are too inclusive | interesting rules are included with many uninteresting cases. A typical approach to this problem is to augment the thresholds ...
متن کاملDiscovering Non-binary Hierarchical Structures with Bayesian Rose Trees
Rich hierarchical structures are common across many disciplines, making the discovery of hierarchies a fundamental exploratory data analysis and unsupervised learning problem. Applications with natural hierarchical structure include topic hierarchies in text (Blei et al. 2010), phylogenies in evolutionary biology (Felsenstein 2003), hierarchical community structures in social networks (Girvan a...
